Besides its pristine facilities and bucolic setting, the Quisisana is known for the musical theater and chamber music performed nightly by a talented staff. Located in western Maine, the resort has the bones of a summer camp-style retreat built in the early 1900s, which means property maintenance is constant. I’d been chatting with the owners for another piece I was writing when they mentioned a massive overhaul of one of the Quisisana’s primary buildings: the music hall. At the time, I was standing in for an outgoing editor at ELLE Decor. The Quisisana’s renovation sounded like an article to me. I visited on the last day of the 2025 summer season. Guests radiated the calm and contentedness that comes from a week in the woods without cell service and easy access to gourmet lobster rolls and wood-fired pizza. The staff, a crew of ebullient young people, appeared from between the pines as I toured the grounds, as if on cue, ready to break out in song. It’s a special place.
