In 2021, I had a column for HODINKEE on “the culture of time.” It was a dream assignment. Whenever a watch or clock of note showed up in a movie, an art exhibit, or a popular book, I got to write about it. I didn’t know anything about watches or clocks before I started this column, which meant the world of horology was totally new and exciting to me. And, I started to notice watch and clock repair shops. One in particular called Swiss Time—a gorgeous showroom and repair workshop in Portland, Maine, opened in 1977 and now, sadly, closed—had a beautiful pocket watch for sale: a Henry-Daniel Capt quarter repeater pocket. It sparked an investigation into Capt, pocket watch movements, and the appeal of the dangling timepiece. Read it here.
