In 2017 I became fascinated by collectors (and dealers) of vintage editions of Joy of Cooking. After this piece was published in Bon Appétit, my inbox was flooded with stories from readers. They told me about the beautiful, beat-up copies they'd inherited from family, shared their favorite recipes, and weighed in on the infamous squirrel illustration, whose appearance, it's often said, is the mark of a "good" edition of Joy. Almost ten years later, I'm still fascinated––and writing a book about it.
